How much seed garlic do I need?

First, figure out how many bulbs or pounds of garlic you would like to harvest. Are you a garlic fanatic eating a bulb a day, or a week or a month? Do your children snack on garlic cloves? Do you cook everything with garlic?

On average, one pound of seed garlic will plant 20-25 row feet of garlic when planted with 6″ between cloves.¬†Hardneck and softneck garlic bulbs have different sized cloves, so it differs a little based on what you are planting.

Each pound of hardneck seed garlic has from 35-50 cloves.  As each clove grows into its own plant and bulb of garlic, each pound will yield 35-50 garlic bulbs (approx 4-7 pounds).

Each pound of softneck garlic seed has from 50-70 cloves, as softnecks have more cloves per bulb than hardnecks. This will yield 50-70 garlic bulbs or approx 6-10 pounds.

This picture gives you a visual reference to how much garlic you can expect to recieve from a selection of the varieties we sell at Sow True Seed.
