Scarlet Emperor

Phaseolus coccineus

HEIRLOOM Vining plants produce decorative scarlet flowers grown as often for their appeal as for the tasty meaty beans. Fat, slightly fuzzy 12" pods are filled with rich, savory flavored beans that dry to a gorgeous lavender and black mottled seed. Give them a trellis in a prominent location.

Runner beans are unique and lovely vining plants that attract hummingbirds to its bright red flowers. The large green pods are edible, but tend to become unpleasantly fibrous early. Instead, the large multicolored beans make a tasty dish when cooked fresh or dried. The starchy roots are still eaten by Central American Indians. Try growing them along a fence for an edible ornamental. Nutrients: dietary fiber, protein, vitamins A and C and riboflavin.
