Description: Sunflowers are a delight of the summer garden whether grown for the nutritious seed, cut flowers or as a cheery ornamental. Also planted as the "Fourth Sister" in Native American tradition because it provides a sturdier trellis for vining beans than corn. They range in size from giants over 12' high with one large flower, to mid-sized (under 10') and smaller (2-4') with one or multiple flowers on each stem. Their colors range from light lemon yellow to dark burgundy with some varieties that combine both. Native American tribes have grown Sunflowers for more than 3000 years.
Guidelines: Growing: A frost sensitive annual, sunflowers like to be planted in fertile, well-amended soil in full sun. Plant sunflowers south of any crops that need shading, or on the northern end of the garden. Direct seed after danger of frost.
