Nicotiana is an annual that prefers full sun to partial shade and average soil with medium moisture. In the Deep South and other hot areas, plants benefit from afternoon shade. To lower disease risk, avoid planting near other members of the Nightshade family (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, etc.).
Start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost and transplant outdoors once the danger of frost has passed. Or direct seed outdoors in spring once the danger of frost has passed. Optimum soil temperature for germination is 60˚F. Sow seeds on the soil surface and press lightly to settle. Seeds will sprout in 10-21 days. Thin seedlings so that mature plants are 12-18" apart.
