Broad Windsor Organic Fava Bean

Fava Bean - Broad Windsor, ORGANIC

Vicia faba

Bring a touch of English flavor to your spring and fall garden. 5-6″ beans drip off bushy, slightly vining plants. Plant at the same time as peas. If planted thickly enough the beans may support each other. If not, have some light supports handy.
Also called Broadbeans, Favas are uniquely cold hardy beans and usually planted around the same time as peas in early spring and late summer. Some varieties will even overwinter without complaint producing high yields of huge rich beans in the spring from a fall planting. Harvest when the outer skin is still tender for very fine textured beans, or harvest when fully mature and then blanch and peel them. In Latin America fried and salted “abas” also make a delicious, nutty bar snack. Nutrients: Dietary Fiber, Protein, Phosphorus, Copper, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, and Manganese, and a very good source of Folate.
