Hollyhock Seeds - Outhouse

$3.25

Alcea rosea

Not for the timid, these Hollyhocks can grow 6-9' tall! Beautiful old variety has multi-colored single blooms of white, pink, red, and burgundy. Loved by bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Outhouse gets its name because it used to be planted around outhouses, both to mask smell and add a pretty visual barrier. Perfect background plant for borders. Full sun. Summer blooming. Biennial.

Site Selection

Hollyhock is a biennial that prefers full sun and will tolerate most soils if well-drained. Plant in an area sheltered from the wind.

Cultivation

Direct sow outdoors in spring once the danger of frost has passed. Seed can also be started indoors 4-5 weeks before the last frost and transplanted outdoors after the last frost date. Sow seeds 3-6" apart on the soil surface and press lightly to settle. Seeds will sprout in 14-21 days. Thin seedlings so that mature plants are 12-24" apart.

For best results, water during long dry periods, but avoid wetting the foliage to prevent diseases.
