Planting Guide and Seed Saving Notes for Anise

How To Grow Anise From Seed

Bed Preparation

Anise is a frost sensitive annual that prefers full sun and well-drained soil.

Planting

Anise does not transplant well, so seed directly into container or garden beds after the danger of frost has passed. Optimal soil temperatures for germination are 65-85°F. Sow seeds ¼" deep and 3-4" apart. Seeds will germinate in 10-12 days. Thin seedlings so mature plants are 12-18" apart.

Harvest

Anise seed will be ready to harvest in approximately 120 days. Harvest seed when flower heads are mostly dry and brown. Cut entire flower heads and if still moist, hang in dry area. Separate seed from flower heads and remove outer seed coat.
