Valerian (Valeriana officinalis)

Sweetly scented pink or yellow flowers appear in the second year. Believed to have strong sedative effects.

How to Grow Valerian from Seed

Bed Preparation

Valerian is a perennial (Zone 4-7) that will grow in full sun or shade and prefers rich, moist soil.

Planting

Start seed indoors in spring and transplant outdoors once the danger of frost has passed. Seeds can also be direct sown outdoors in spring. Sow seeds 8-12" apart on the soil surface and press lightly to settle. Seeds germinate best when soil temps are 65-80°F. Seeds will sprout in 10-20 days. Thin seedlings so that mature plants are 30-36″ apart.

Harvest

Harvest roots in the fall of the first or second year. Root quality deteriorates after the second year. Valerian root is used fresh or dried in tinctures and decorations.
