Lavandula angustifolia

The classic multi-purpose herb! Not only are the plants a lovely ornamental, you can use the dried flowers for arrangements, in aromatherapy applications, as a bug repellent, for culinary uses, and to make a potent essential oil. The plants grow to 12-20" tall and sport spikes of bluish-purple flowers.

Direct seed in early spring or transplant into the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Lavender benefits from cold stratification. It will need full sun and well-draining soil. Water well to ensure good germination. Once germinated, lavender will need at least an inch of water per week. Typically grown for leaves and flowers. Perennial.

When to Seed Lavender

Lavender should be direct seeded outdoors in fall, or stratified indoors and sown in trays for transplanting after all danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant Lavender

This plant will appreciate a spot with full sun. Loose, well-draining soil is ideal for this Mediterranean plant, but it can tolerate an array of growing conditions. This perennial bloom will spread and grow one to three feet tall, so keep this in mind when choosing a location!

Growing Lavender

Sow seeds 1/16 inch deep and two to six inches apart. Once germinated, thin your seedlings to 12 to 24 inches. Once established, this plant is quite drought tolerant.

Harvesting Lavender

Lavender can be harvested for cut flowers or tea to use fresh or dried. Use sharp shears to harvest the flower spikes before the flowers fully open, when the stems are covered in lavender-colored buds.
