The Kapoor variety is the best tulsi basil for temperate gardens. Also known as Holy Basil, this very aromatic annual has been known to self-seed. It has been used as an immune-enhancing, antifungal and antibacterial medicinal herb. It has been grown in India since ancient times. Makes a wonderful, soothing tea.

Direct seed or transplant into the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Basil will need full sun and well-draining soil. Water well to ensure good germination. Once germinated, basil will need at least an inch of water per week. Typically grown for leaves and flowers. Annual.

Where to Plant Basil

This plant will appreciate a spot with full sun. Loose, well-draining soil is ideal but this plant will tolerate a wide range of growing conditions. Some light afternoon shade can be beneficial to prevent the leaves from getting burned.

Growing Basil

Sow seeds ¼ inch deep and two to four inches apart. Once mature, thin to ten to 14 inches apart. When established, this herb is low maintenance.

Harvesting Basil

Basil leaves can be harvested with sharp shears and used fresh or dried. Regularly harvesting the flower spikes will result in a longer foliage harvest and bushier plants.
