When to Seed Mullein

This biennial herb should be direct seeded into the garden in early spring or transplanted once all danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant Mullein

This plant will appreciate a spot with full sun. This plant will tolerate a wide range of growing conditions and is perfect for the part of your garden with particularly poor soils. It is biennial and will readily reseed, so keep that in mind when choosing a planting location.

Growing Mullein

Sow seeds on the surface of the soil and eight to 12 inches apart. It needs light to germinate, so take care not to cover the seeds. Once mature, thin to 20 to 24 inches apart. When established, this herb is low maintenance and drought tolerant.

Harvesting Mullein

Mullein leaves can be harvested and used fresh or dried. Use sharp shears to harvest what you want, leaving at least ⅔ of the plant intact.
