“Sugar Snap” and “Sugar Ann” Snap Pea Seed Packet Art
Rose Mary Berlin of Yorktown Heights, New York was selected to design the artwork for two of our Snap Pea seed packets: “Sugar Snap” and “Sugar Ann.”
What is your favorite vegetable to eat and why?
Anything fresh from the garden tastes light-years better than something from the store…but I especially love tomatoes! And Swiss chard, green beans and snap peas!
Why did you choose the medium you used for the packet design?
This is a slightly different technique for me —watercolor— but with a heavier colored pencil. I had already started a vegetable series, and I was going for a somewhat vintage look.
What is your favorite medium to work with and why?
Most of my art begins with watercolor. I love that it doesn’t need turps or other chemicals, easy clean up. It also works with many other mediums— like colored pencil, marker, gouache. Usually I use Photoshop at the end to fix mistakes, make changes, etc. I only use Arches brand watercolor paper, cold press.
Do you have anything else you want to share with potential customers?
I have been illustrating art for children for over 20 years, I currently illustrate Little Bunny & Baby Bunny for Highlight’s High 5 & Hello magazines. I have been licensing my art for about 5 years now. My images have been on greeting cards, puzzles and garden flags.
