Planting Guide and Seed Saving Notes for Black Eyed Susan Vine

Black Eyed Susan Vine (Thunbergia alata)

Masses of blooms all summer and large, lush foliage that looks very full and bushy but never gets out of hand. Ideal for growing up through fences and gates, or up and over your mailbox. Works well in containers with a small trellis too, where its full habit makes an impressive display.

How to Grow Black Eyed Susan Vine from Seed

Bed Preparation

This frost sensitive annual prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soils.

Planting

Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date or direct sow outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. For best results, nick the hard seed coat and/or soak seeds in water overnight prior to sowing. Sow seeds 1-2" deep and 4-6" apart. Optimal soil temperature for germination is 70-75˚F. Seeds will sprout in 5-21 days. Thin seedlings so that mature plants are 6-12" apart.
