Flax Seeds - Blue Perennial Flax

$3.25

Linum perenne

Perennial flax is a hardy, drought-tolerant wildflower that blooms with a showy display of pale blue flowers atop elegant, wispy stems. Though it is native to Europe, it has naturalized throughout much of the United States. Plants grow 12 to 24 inches tall, and flower in late spring through early summer beginning in their second year. This self-seeding perennial is hardy to zone 5.

Perennial flax is related to the annual flax that is grown commercially for fiber and seed (Linum usitatissimum), and can yield small quantities of fiber, but should not be harvested for edible seed.

These seeds benefit from cold stratification.

When to Seed Flax

Flax should be direct seeded outdoors in fall, or stratified indoors and sown in trays for transplanting after all danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant Flax

This plant will appreciate a spot with full sun to partial shade. Loose, well-draining soil is ideal but this plant will tolerate an extremely wide range of growing conditions. This perennial bloom will flower in the second year and will come back year after year. It will readily spread and reseed, so keep this in mind when choosing a location! Plants reach one to two feet tall.

Growing Flax

Sow seeds ⅛ inch deep and four to eight inches apart. Once established, this plant is quite drought tolerant.

Harvesting Flax

Flax can be harvested for cut flowers or left to mature in the garden to benefit the many pollinator species that are attracted to it.
