Liatris spicata

Dense Blazing Star, also known as Marsh Blazing Star or Gayfeather, is an Eastern US native wildflower with elegant, slender leaves that sends up showy, bright purple flower stalks in mid to late summer. It grows naturally in wet soils near streams and in marshy areas, but will do well in a typical well-drained garden as well. This is a wonderful plant to support your local native bee population! Plants can grow in both full sun and partial shade.

Sow these seeds outdoors in late fall or winter, or stratify them in the refrigerator for 60 days before planting outside in spring. Some sources suggest that scarifying the seeds (lightly nicking the seed coat with a knife or scratching with sandpaper) will improve germination rates. These perennial plants will return year after year, so choose a location where you will want them for the long term.
