Liatris spicata

Dense Blazing Star, also known as Marsh Blazing Star or Gayfeather, is an Eastern US native wildflower with elegant, slender leaves that sends up showy, bright purple flower stalks in mid to late summer. It grows naturally in wet soils near streams and in marshy areas, but will do well in a typical well-drained garden as well. This is a wonderful plant to support your local native bee population! Plants can grow in both full sun and partial shade. These seeds will require stratification, and may benefit from scarification. Perennial.

When to Seed Liatris

Liatris should be direct seeded outdoors in fall, or stratified indoors and sown in trays for transplanting after all danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant Liatris

This plant will appreciate a spot with full sun. Loose, well-draining soil is ideal but this plant will tolerate an extremely wide range of growing conditions. This perennial bloom will flower in the second year and come back year after year. It will readily spread and reseed, so keep this in mind when choosing a location! Plants reach three to six feet tall.

Growing Liatris

Sow seeds ⅛ inch deep and 12 inches apart. Once germinated, thin your seedlings to 12 to 18 inches. Once established, this plant is quite drought tolerant.

Harvesting Liatris

Liatris can be harvested for cut flowers or left to mature in the garden to benefit the many pollinator species that are attracted to it.
