When to Seed Lobelia

Lobelia should be direct seeded outdoors in fall, or stratified indoors and sown in trays for transplanting after all danger of frost has passed. 

Where to Plant Lobelia

This plant will appreciate a spot with full sun. Loose, well-draining soil is ideal but this plant will tolerate an extremely wide range of growing conditions. Cardinal flower, of the two varieties of lobelia available, in particular really appreciates a wet, swampy area. This perennial bloom will flower in the second year and come back year after year. It will readily spread and reseed, so keep this in mind when choosing a location! Plants reach two to three feet tall. 

Growing Lobelia

Sow seeds on the surface of the soil and three inches apart. Once germinated, thin your seedlings to 18 to 24 inches. 

Harvesting Lobelia

Lobelia can be harvested for cut flowers or left to mature in the garden to benefit the many pollinator species that are attracted to it.
