Ratibida columnifera
A robust, drought tolerant native flower that will happily naturalize in any area you’d like to neglect, and will fit right into your cut flower garden too. Blooms last a week or more when cut. Characteristic black, cone-shaped heads are surrounded by drooping, deep-red petals with a cheery yellow accent. At maturity the upright branching stems may become woody. Plants grow 12-36" tall.
Direct seed in early spring or transplant into the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Mexican Hat benefits from cold stratification. It will need full sun and well-draining soil but tolerates a wide range of conditions. Water well to ensure good germination. Once established, Mexican Hat is fairly drought tolerant. Typically grown for flowers. Perennial.
