Lunaria biennis

Early purple or white blooms followed by seed pods which when dried have a distinct flat oval shape with a pearly membrane. Flowers are nice in spring bouquets, and seedpods create a lovely look in dried arrangements. Also called Honesty. Spring blooming in the second year. Full to partial sun. Self-seeding biennial. Site Selection

 

This biennial grows in full sun to shade and prefers moist, rich soils. In the south, plants prefer afternoon shade.

 

Cultivation

 

Direct sow outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Sow seeds 1/4" deep and 4-6" apart. Optimal soil temperature for germination is 65-80˚F. Seeds will sprout in 14-28 days. Thin seedlings so that mature plants are 12-18" apart.
