Partridge Pea Seeds

Chamaecrista fasciculata

Partridge Pea is a beautiful and ecologically important nitrogen-fixing flower species native to much of the Eastern US. Its cheery yellow flowers are much loved by bees and other pollinators, and it is the larval host for several native butterflies, including the Little Yellow, Sleepy Orange, and Orange Sulphur.  It is also known as “sensitive plant,” because its leaves fold up when touched.  The plants will grow to about two feet tall. They prefer dry soils and full sun or partial shade, and will self-reseed once established in favorable conditions.

When to Seed Partridge Pea

Partridge pea should be direct seeded outdoors in fall, or stratified indoors and sown in trays for transplanting after all danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant Partridge Pea

This plant will appreciate a spot with full sun to partial shade. Loose, well-draining soil is ideal but this plant will tolerate an extremely wide range of growing conditions, but prefer dry soil over wet. This perennial bloom will flower in the second year and come back year after year. It will readily spread and reseed, so keep this in mind when choosing a location! Plants reach one to two feet tall.

Growing Partridge Pea

Sow seeds ¼ inch deep and six to eight inches apart. Once germinated, thin your seedlings to six to 12 inches. Once established, this plant is quite drought tolerant.

Harvesting Partridge Pea

This flower is not typically harvested and is better enjoyed as a landscaping and pollinator plant.
