Penstemon digitalis

Foxglove Beardtongue is a native wildflower found throughout much of the Eastern US. In midsummer, it sends up three- to five-foot-tall stalks of beautiful white, tubular flowers that are frequented by many types of native bees and hummingbirds. It prefers dry soils, but is adaptable to a range of light conditions from full sun to part shade. Makes an excellent addition to a pollinator garden! These seeds require stratification. Perennial.

When to Seed Penstemon

Penstemon should be direct seeded outdoors in fall, or stratified indoors and sown in trays for transplanting after all danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant Penstemon

This plant will appreciate a spot with full sun to partial shade. Loose, well-draining soil is ideal but this plant will tolerate an extremely wide range of growing conditions, but prefers dry soil over wet. This perennial bloom will flower in the second year and come back year after year. It will readily spread and reseed, so keep this in mind when choosing a location! Plants reach three to five feet tall.

Growing Penstemon

Sow seeds on the surface of the soil, 18 inches apart. Once established, this plant is quite drought tolerant.

Harvesting Penstemon

This flower is not typically harvested and is better enjoyed as a landscaping and pollinator plant.
