When to Seed Coleus

This annual ornamental should be transplanted or direct seeded into the garden once all danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant Coleus

This plant will need full sun to partial shade and will prefer loose, well-draining soil. It grows 12 to 16 inches tall, making it a great filler for many landscapes.

Growing Coleus

Sow seeds 1/16 inch deep and six to eight inches apart. Once mature, thin to 12 to 15 inches apart. Keep soil consistently moist throughout the growing season. Mulch is great, but avoid using cedar mulch as this can cause the soil to become too acidic for coleus. Intermittent pinching of growing tips can result in bushy plants, which are attractive in many landscapes.

Harvesting Coleus

Coleus is not harvested for food. It is grown mainly as an ornamental landscaping plant.
