Rudbeckia laciniata

Also known as Cutleaf Coneflower, and Green Headed Coneflower. Well known and loved in permaculture circles. The roots are used medicinally much like Echinacea, the abundant greens are a delicious edible, and the flowers are loved by pollinators. This plant is revered by the Cherokee for its many wondrous uses. Rudbeckia benefits from cold stratification. Typically grown for flowers. Perennial.

When to Seed Rudbeckia

Rudbeckia should be direct seeded outdoors in fall, or stratified indoors and sown in trays for transplanting after all danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant Rudbeckia

This plant will appreciate a spot with full sun. Loose, well-draining soil is ideal but this plant will tolerate an extremely wide range of growing conditions. This perennial bloom will flower in the second year (except Black-Eyed-Susan, which will flower in the first year) and come back year after year. It will readily spread and reseed, so keep this in mind when choosing a location! Plants reach two to four feet tall.

Growing Rudbeckia

Sow seeds ⅛ inch deep and four to six inches apart. Once germinated, thin your seedlings to 12 to 24 inches. Once established, this plant is quite drought tolerant.

Harvesting Rudbeckia

Rudbeckia can be harvested for cut flowers or left to mature in the garden to benefit the many pollinators and butterfly species that are attracted to it.

Seed Saving

Sochan seed matures in late summer/fall. Seed is ready to harvest when dry and brown. Store seeds in a cool, dry place. Seeds are viable for 2-3 years.
