Sweet Pea Seed - Royal Family Mix

$3.25

Lathyrus odoratus

A favorite of hummingbirds, Royal Family sweet peas are a hardy old-time flower variety that is well-loved for their easy-to-grow, sweet smelling, multi-colored blossoms. Sweet peas love cool, moist weather and can be planted very early. 6-foot plants should be trellised or be allowed to cascade over hanging baskets. Don't eat them though! All parts of the sweet pea plant are poisonous. Do not plant them anywhere near edible peas, to avoid any mix-ups. Typically grown for flowers. Annual.

When to Seed Sweet Pea

This annual flower should be transplanted or direct seeded into the garden once all major danger of frost has passed. Unlike many other annuals, sweet peas prefer to germinate in cooler soils. They can be planted several weeks before the last frost date.

Where to Plant Sweet Pea

Choose a spot that gets full sun to partial shade and has loose, well-draining soil. It will require a trellis or something to climb on.

Growing Sweet Pea

Sow seeds one inch deep and three inches apart. This seed will benefit from scarification ahead of planting. If direct seeding, once your seedlings start germinating, thin them to six to 12 inches apart. If your growing location doesn’t have the most nutrient dense soil, mix in plenty of organic matter ahead of planting, or consider fertilizing throughout the growing season.

Harvesting Sweet Pea

Sweet peas are not harvested for food, as all parts of the plant are poisonous. It is grown mainly as an ornamental and is beloved by hummingbirds.
