When to Seed Dianthus

This biennial flower should be transplanted or direct seeded into the garden once all danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant Dianthus

This flower will need full sun to partial shade and will prefer loose, well-draining soil that is rich in nutrients. It can grow eight to 24 inches tall, so keep this in mind when choosing a location.

Growing Dianthus

Sow seeds 1/16 inch deep and two to four inches apart, being ready to thin your seedlings to their mature planting distance of six to ten inches. This biennial will flower in the second year. It will readily reseed.

Harvesting Dianthus

Dianthus can be harvested for cut flowers or left to mature in the garden to benefit the many butterfly and moth species it is a host for.
