HEIRLOOM. This beautiful green shiso is a well-loved heirloom from Japan, where it is considered one of the dento yasai, or culturally important traditional vegetables. The leaves have a texture similar to mint, and a complex, citrusy flavor with hints of spice. In Japan, whole leaves of green shiso accompany sushi and sashimi, and chopped leaves flavor many other dishes. In the US, the herb has recently gained attention of mixologists for use in drinks, and chefs creatively using its unique flavor in desserts. It can add a little twist to just about any dish where you would usually use basil or mint.
Ohba Ao green shiso is a tender annual that grows in a bush habit similarly to basil. It can be started indoors in early spring, or direct seeded in the garden after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. It needs full sun or part shade. Leaves will be ready to harvest in 60-70 days. Pinch off the growth tips regularly as you would with basil, to encourage bushier growth and delay flowering. 0.3 gram packet contains a minimum of 110 seeds.
