When to Seed Castor Bean
Direct seed or transplant this ornamental plant into the garden once all danger of frost has passed.
Where to Plant Castor Bean
Choose a spot that gets full sun and has loose, well-draining soil. Castor beans tend to quickly reach great heights, so make sure you’re not shading anything else out when choosing a location. Keep in mind that this is a tropical plant so it’s going to need lots of heat and sun!
Growing Castor Bean
Sow seeds ½ inch deep and six to 12 inches apart. Soaking the seeds overnight ahead of planting may help increase germination rates. If direct seeding, once your seedlings start germinating, thin them to 24 to 36 inches apart. If your growing location doesn’t have the most nutrient dense soil, mix in plenty of organic matter ahead of planting, or consider fertilizing throughout the growing season.
Harvesting Castor Bean
Castor beans are not harvested for food, as the beans are poisonous. It is grown mainly as an ornamental and a pest deterrent.
