When to Seed Chinese Aster
These annual blooms should be either direct seeded outdoors or transplanted after all danger of frost has passed. When starting indoors, start your seeds six to eight weeks before your last frost date.
Where to Plant Chinese Aster
This flower will love a spot with full sun and well-draining soil, though they will tolerate some partial shade.
Growing Chinese Aster
Sow seeds ⅛ inch deep and, if direct seeding, four to six inches apart. Keep the seedlings well watered until germination, about ten to 14 days after planting. Transplant, or thin, your seedlings to 12 to 18 inches apart, their mature planting distance. These plants can grow one to three feet tall and may benefit from being staked. Fertilizing regularly throughout the growing season can help encourage growth, but take care to stop fertilizing once the buds begin to form.
Harvesting Chinese Aster
The outside florets will begin to open first and can be harvested with sharp shears for mini bouquets ahead of when the main head is ready.
