Bed Preparation

Sochan is a perennial that will tolerate average soils and requires moderate moisture. Choose a site with full sun to partial shade.

Planting

Seeds need a period of cold, moist conditions for optimal germination. Direct sow outdoors in fall or stratify seed in a refrigerator for 3-4 weeks before sowing in the spring. Sow seeds on the soil surface and press lightly to settle. Seeds will sprout in 5-21 days. Thin seedlings so that mature plants are 12-18" apart.

Sochan is not drought tolerant. Provide water in times of drought.

Harvest

Sochan leaves are edible and typically eaten after boiled or sauteed until soft. Harvest young leaves in spring.

Seed Saving

Sochan seed matures in late summer/fall. Seed is ready to harvest when dry and brown. Store seeds in a cool, dry place. Seeds are viable for 2-3 years.
