Nepeta cataria

Euphoric effects for felines. 30-50" tall herb resembling mint in appearance, with grayish-green leaves. Catnip seeds naturally have a low germination rate which is improved with cold stratification

Direct seed in early spring or transplant into the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Catnip benefits from cold stratification.  It will need full sun and well-draining soil. Water well to ensure good germination. Once germinated, catnip will need at least an inch of water per week. Typically grown for leaves and flowers. Perennial.

When to Seed Catnip

Catnip should be direct seeded outdoors in fall, or stratified indoors and sown in trays for transplanting after all danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant Catnip

This plant will appreciate a spot with full sun. Loose, well-draining soil is ideal but this plant will tolerate an extremely wide range of growing conditions. This perennial bloom will come back year after year.

Growing Catnip

Sow seeds ⅛ inch deep and 18 inches apart. Once germinated, thin your seedlings to 24 inches apart.

Harvesting Catnip

Catnip leaves can be harvested with sharp shears and used fresh or dried. Regularly harvesting the flower spikes and foliage will result in a longer foliage harvest and bushier plants.
