Salvia sclarea

Large herb grows 3-5' tall with gorgeous purple and white flowers. Makes a dramatic backdrop to any garden. Flowers are extremely aromatic and are used in cookery, medicinally, and in making wines.

Direct seed in early spring or transplant into the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Clary sage seeds benefit from cold stratification. It will need full sun and well-draining soil. Water well to ensure good germination. Once germinated, clary sage will need at least an inch of water per week. Typically grown for leaves and flowers. Perennial.

When to Seed Clary Sage

Clary sage should be direct seeded outdoors in fall, or stratified indoors and sown in trays for transplanting after all danger of frost has passed. 

Where to Plant Clary Sage

This plant will need a spot with full sun and loose, well-draining soil. This perennial bloom will come back year after year. 

Growing Clary Sage

Sow seeds on the surface of the soil and eight to 14 inches apart. Once germinated, thin your seedlings to 24 to 36 inches apart.
