Stinging Nettle Seeds

$3.25

Urtica dioica

Young shoots taste like spinach and are rich in vitamins and iron. Drying or cooking eliminates the sting, and the attractive plants have a long history of use in herbal medicine. Nettles are also the exclusive larval food plant for several species of butterfly.

Direct seed in early spring or transplant into the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Stinging nettle benefits from cold stratification. It will need full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Water well to ensure good germination. Once germinated, stinging nettle will need at least an inch of water per week. Typically grown for leaves. Perennial.

When to Seed Stinging Nettle

Stinging Nettle should be direct seeded outdoors in fall, or stratified indoors and sown in trays for transplanting after all danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant Stinging Nettle

This plant will appreciate a spot with full sun to partial shade. Loose, well-draining soil is ideal but this plant will tolerate an extremely wide range of growing conditions. This perennial green will come back year after year. It will readily spread and reseed, so keep this in mind when choosing a location! Plants reach one to two feet tall.

Growing Stinging Nettle

Sow seeds on the surface of the soil and four to six inches apart. Once germinated, thin your seedlings to 36 to 42 inches. When established, this herb is low maintenance.

Harvesting Stinging Nettle

Stinging Nettle can be harvested for edible greens (once blanched), teas or salves, or left to mature in the garden to benefit the many butterfly species that are attracted to it.
