Valerian Seeds

Valeriana officinalis

Sweetly scented pink, yellow, or white flowers bloom on plants that reach three to five feet tall. Well known for its medicinal properties.

Direct seed in early spring or transplant into the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Valerian benefits from cold stratification. Requires light to germinate so gently press seeds into the soil without covering them. It will need full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Water well to ensure good germination. Once germinated, Valerian will need at least an inch of water per week. Typically grown for leaves and flowers. Perennial.

When to Seed Valerian

Valerian should be direct seeded outdoors in fall, or stratified indoors and sown in trays for transplanting after all danger of frost has passed. This seed requires light to germinate, so if sowing indoors, ensure you’re providing grow lights.

Where to Plant Valerian

This plant will appreciate a spot with full sun. Loose, well-draining soil is ideal but this plant will tolerate an extremely wide range of growing conditions. This perennial bloom comes back year after year and can reach three to five feet tall, so keep this in mind when choosing a location!

Growing Valerian

Sow seeds on the surface of the soil, eight to 12 inches apart. Once germinated, thin your seedlings to 30 to 36 inches. Once established, this plant is quite low maintenance.

Harvesting Valerian

Valerian can be harvested for cut flowers or left to mature in the garden to benefit the many butterfly and hummingbird species that are attracted to it.
