Clitoria ternatea

The delicate flowers of this vining plant are traditionally used in Southeast Asia to make vibrant blue food coloring, or combined with lemongrass to make hot or cold tea. The tea will turn purple if you add lemon juice! Many cultures ascribe medicinal value to the flowers as well.

Direct seed in early spring or transplant into the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Butterfly pea benefits from scarification and soaking ahead of planting. Provide a trellis for this flower. It will need full sun and well-draining soil. Water well to ensure good germination. Once germinated, butterfly pea will need at least an inch of water per week. Typically grown for flowers. Annual.

Butterfly pea is an annual that prefers full sun to partial shade and rich, well-drained soil with moderate moisture.

Cultivation

For best germination, nick the hard seed coat prior to planting. Direct seed outdoors in early spring. Plants will tolerate a light frost. Optimum soil temperature for germination is 65-80˚F. Sow 1" deep and 3" apart. Seeds will sprout in 10-21 days. Thin so mature plants are 6-12" apart.

To reduce disease, avoid overhead watering and do not plant legumes in the same location year after year.
