Digitalis purpurea

The classic cottage-garden blossom. Beautiful spires of bell-shaped flowers that range in color from white to pink and bloom in the second year after planting. Flowers grow up to 6′ and are especially attractive to bumblebees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. If the main stalk is cut, side shoots will form and bloom later into the season. A biennial that may self-sow but is not invasive. All parts of this plant are poisonous. Typically grown for flowers. Biennial.

When to Seed Foxglove

Foxglove should be direct seeded outdoors in fall, or stratified indoors and sown in trays for transplanting after all danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant Foxglove

This plant will appreciate a spot with full sun to partial shade. Loose, well-draining soil is ideal but this plant will tolerate a wide range of growing conditions. This biennial bloom will flower in the second year and is likely to reseed, so keep this in mind when choosing a location! Plants reach two to six feet tall.

Growing Foxglove

Sow seeds 1/16 inch deep and two to four inches apart. When germinated, thin to its mature planting distance of six to ten inches apart.

Harvesting Foxglove

Foxglove can be harvested for cut flowers or left to mature in the garden to benefit the many pollinator species that are attracted to it.
