When to Seed Poppies

Poppies should be direct seeded outdoors in fall, or stratified indoors and sown in trays for transplanting after all danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant Poppies

This flower will need full sun and will prefer loose, well-draining soil, however, it is not super picky about its growing conditions.

Growing Poppies

Sow seeds ⅛ inch deep and three to six inches apart. Once mature, thin to six to 12 inches apart. Once established, these poppies are low maintenance and drought tolerant. If left to their own devices, these poppies will readily reseed.

Harvesting Poppies

Poppies can be harvested for cut flowers or left to mature in the garden to benefit the many pollinator species that are attracted to it. Breadseed poppies can be harvested once they’ve gone to seed.

Seed Saving

After seed pods have completely dried, open seeds and pour into a non-porous container as seeds are generally very small.
