Shiso Seeds - Purple - Sow True Seed

Shiso Seeds - Red

Perilla frutescens

This Asian culinary and medicinal herb is related to basil and mint, but has a flavor all its own. Bushy upright plants grow up to two feet tall, with leaves ranging from green with purple tinge around the edges to deep reddish purple. Leaves are serrated and somewhat frilly in appearance. Frost-sensitive annual, requires part shade to full sun.

Shiso is a tender annual that grows in a bush habit similarly to basil. It can be started indoors in early spring, or direct seeded in the garden after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. It needs full sun or part shade. Leaves will be ready to harvest in 60-70 days. Pinch off the growth tips regularly as you would with basil, to encourage bushier growth and delay flowering.

0.3 gram packet contains a minimum of 110 seeds.

When to Seed Shiso

This annual herb should be direct seeded into the garden in early spring or transplanted once all danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant Shiso

This plant will appreciate a spot with full sun. Loose, well-draining soil is ideal but this plant will tolerate a wide range of growing conditions. Some light afternoon shade can be beneficial to prevent the leaves from getting burned.

Growing Shiso

Sow seeds ¼ inch deep and four to six inches apart. Once mature, thin to ten to 14 inches apart. When established, this herb is low maintenance.

Harvesting Shiso

Shiso leaves can be harvested with sharp shears and used fresh or dried. Regularly harvesting the flower spikes will result in a longer foliage harvest and bushier plants.
